SpiceJet Expands Fleet with Airbus A340 Aircraft

SpiceJet has taken a significant step towards expanding its network and increasing capacity by signing a lease agreement for a wide-body Airbus A340 aircraft. The aircraft is expected to arrive in India by the end of September, with operations slated to begin in the first week of October.

Enhancing Operational Flexibility

Initially, the Airbus A340 will operate under a wet lease arrangement, which includes crew, maintenance, and insurance. Later, SpiceJet plans to transition to a damp lease model, providing more operational flexibility while allowing the airline to manage certain aspects of the aircraft’s operation.

Growing Demand

The addition of the A340 will enable SpiceJet to cater to growing passenger demand on domestic and international services. The aircraft’s long-range capabilities make it an ideal choice for long-haul and high-capacity routes.

Future Expansion Plans

SpiceJet is also in discussions to lease a second Airbus A340, signaling potential further expansion of its fleet. This development follows the airline’s agreements to induct 18 Boeing 737 aircraft, including four Boeing 737 MAX planes, scheduled to join the fleet from October 2025.

Quote from the Airline

“We are introducing the Airbus A340 into our fleet as part of our plans to expand our domestic and international operations. The aircraft will allow us to operate on routes with higher demand. Discussions are ongoing for another A340, alongside the planned induction of Boeing 737 aircraft.” – Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer at SpiceJet.

What to Expect

The introduction of the Airbus A340 is expected to increase seating capacity and provide additional operational options for the airline. With regulatory approvals in place, SpiceJet is poised to take its operations to the next level.
