IndiGo outlined a profitable performance for the final quarter of 2022

Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo, supports Tata’s consolidation of the Indian airline market. Given the maturity it would bring to the market, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers thinks Tata Group’s engagement in India’s airline business is a good thing for all of the nation’s carriers.

Elbers, who took over as IndiGo’s CEO in September of last year, said on 3 February as the low-cost airline announced a profitable performance for the last quarter of 2022. Elbers emphasised Tata’s consolidation actions as being advantageous for the wider business.

“The Tatas are taking initiatives for the Indian aviation business, which is a good thing,” he says. “There is some consolidation within the Indian aviation landscape. It will continue to grow and expand, which will ultimately benefit the market and all of the participants in it.

In addition, Elbers asserts that IndiGo would continue to “concentrate on what has been the success of our firm in the previous 16 years,” with “cost-leadership” as the primary objective, despite the potential competitive power of an airline group led by a revitalised Air India.

His remarks came as IndiGo reported a “robust” profit in its fiscal third quarter, on the strength of record-high revenue for the quarter; the carrier had previously reported three consecutive quarters of losses, as the weak rupee and high fuel costs weighed on its performance during the Covid-19 recovery. Elbers was upbeat during his second earnings call as chief executive.

As a result of IndiGo’s financial performance, several experts have previously questioned whether the company regrets not earning higher returns while rivals like SpiceJet and Air India were preoccupied with adjusting to a new ownership structure.

Elbers explains that IndiGo is already running above pre-Covid levels and intends to increase in the “high teens” during the next financial year. Today, supported by a better set of financial outcomes, IndiGo is emerging from the epidemic in a commanding position when it comes to capacity in India. That’s in spite of an unknown number of aircraft being grounded for maintenance issues related to supply chain issues, as well as additional capacity pressure brought on by delays in the arrival of new Airbus A320neo-family aircraft.

According to Elbers, IndiGo is keeping some of its older A320 aircraft longer than originally planned in order to address these recurring problems..

Cirium scheduling data demonstrates IndiGo’s capacity advantage over competitors, showing that it started 2023 as the undisputed leader when it comes to capacity on Indian domestic services. For instance, in January, it operated over 48,000 domestic flights with about 8 billion available seat kilometres (ASKs), as opposed to Air India’s 8,000 flights and 1.4 billion ASKs.

ASKs were still only half of those given by IndiGo across a combined total of roughly 22,000 flights when Air India’s data is coupled with that of Vistara, AirAsia India, and Air India Express – reflecting the capacity that comes under Tata control.

The four Tata carriers matched IndiGo’s 10.1 billion ASKs on overseas services that touched India in January, despite IndiGo having a larger flight count (53,000 vs. 29,000), which is indicative of its focus on shorter-haul routes.

Having a sizable competitor that is financed by taxpayers is not good competition for us, said Ronojoy Dutta, Elber’s predecessor, who had also welcomed news of Tata Group’s probable involvement in the nation’s aviation business in late 2021.

Since coming under Tata ownership in early 2022,   Air India has begun implementing a comprehensive business transformation strategy that involves combining Vistara into the flag carrier and combining AirAsia India into Air India Express.

Elbers said IndiGo is not in a rush to imitate Air India, which is about to make a sizable order for brand-new planes, pointing to IndiGo’s outstanding pledge to purchase hundreds of A320neo-family aircraft.
