India has emerged as the third-largest air market in the world, driven by its rapidly growing air traffic. Boeing and Airbus are bullish on India’s aviation future, anticipating a substantial increase in air travel. Government initiatives to enhance airport infrastructure and promote air travel have further fueled this growth.
India’s air traffic is growing rapidly, with the country’s 1.4 billion people driving demand. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will hold its annual general meeting in New Delhi in June, underscoring India’s market power.
According to Remi Maillard, CEO of Airbus India and South Asia, “India is the rising star of global aerospace…It is the fastest-growing commercial aviation market in the world and it will remain so for the next 20 years.”
Boeing, Airbus’s competitor, shares this optimism. Salil Gupte, CEO of Boeing India, described India as “the most dynamic market on the planet and certainly the most exciting.”
India’s civil aviation ministry claims that the sector is experiencing a “meteoric rise.” Boeing projects a 7% annual growth in traffic in South Asia, primarily driven by India, until 2043.
Per capita, air travel in India remains low at 0.12, compared to 0.46 in China. This presents a significant opportunity for growth, with Boeing estimating that just 2% of daily train users switching to flying could quadruple the air market.
Since taking office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has prioritized aviation growth. His government has implemented policies to improve air connections between megacities and small communities, aiming to make air travel more accessible to the common people.
